Maah Daah Hey Trail Thru-Hike, ND

Two Week Trip

Jun 3 - Jun 18, 2023 -- $2200 ★★★, YOU CANNOT REGISTER FOR THIS TRIP YET AS DETAILS ARE NOT FINAL

It's a thru-hike!

The North Dakota Badlands are a seldom visited, visually stunning playground that we plan to thru-hike on a 145 mile long trail called the The Maah Daah Hey Trail. The Maah Daah Hey Trail features tallgrass prairies, ubiquious bison, panoramic plateaus, picturesque buttes, free roaming wild horses, chattering prairie dogs, a petrified forest and the Little Missouri River. Most of the trail is found on the Little Missouri National Grassland while much of it also traverses Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Theodore Roosevelt himself visited here in 1883 on a bison hunt. The bison remain in the park as do mule deer, prairie dogs, elk, wild horses and even bighorn sheep. There are also owls, eagles, woodpeckers and orioles. The often unobstructed views give us a wonderful opportunity to look around instead of at your feet while hiking. (This also means to expect sun exposure). June is one of the best times to thru-hike the trail.

Much of the trail will be flat(is), exposed to the sun and possibly very muddy if it rains. However, expect unobstructed views, grassland and warm weather.

Here is our proposed route.

Weather

Weather is always an important concern when hiking. Historical September weather averages 60s and 70s during the day and 40s and 50s at night, perfect for backpacking. However we might experience blazing heat or rain during the day or cold nights. Obviously, you never know until the week of the trip. Bring lots of sun protection and water containers that add up to 8 liters of capacity.

Difficulty

This is a 150 mile thru-hike. We will be hiking almost all day, every day in order to get to the next campsite and must average over 10 miles per day. While we feel this is attainable given the not-so-steep terrain and good trail condition, two weeks is a long time to hike without a 'zero' day. Plus a rainy day could change the trail into a slick, muddy slog. There is little tree cover and in June the temperatures may swing wildly between freezing and 100 degrees.

Still, we feel this is readily attainable for those who can stay mentally positive and will be an experience you'll always treasure. Be ready to stray from the proposed itinerary depending upon weather, trail conditions and even the participants who may hike longer (or shorter) mileage on any given day.

Cost

$2200 per person double occupancy. Here, double occupancy means that you will share a room with another participant during the hotel night in Dickinson. You will also be responsible for transportation to and from Dickinson, ND (DIK), personal equipment, restaurant meals eaten off the trail and any gratuities for guides.

Covered expenses include 1 hotel night, 14 days of trail meals, ground transportation to/from the trail, National Park permits, National Grassland permits, campground fees and awesome guides.

Tipping: In order to keep our prices competitive with (and hopefully favorable to) other outfitters, we shamefully can’t pay our guides as much as we think they deserve. Like most other guiding services, we rely on the generosity of our participants to make up this shortfall by tipping the guides. While tips are not required or expected, if your guides have served you well, please consider a gratuity so they can continue living their extravagant lifestyles of eating powdered meals, sleeping in the dirt and pooping in smelly outhouses and small holes they've dug.

Important Note

Important! Unlike typical Fitpacking trips, we will only infrequently obtain or treat surface water. Instead, the guides will cache water (and food) ahead of time that we'll pick up in various locations along the way. We will pick up water and/or food about every other day or more. At times, be prepared to carry 8 liters (16 pounds) of water in your pack that must last until the next water cache. Although this is burdensome when we encounter the water, by the time we reach the next water cache, we'll be carrying little no water all (0 pounds).
